The plump baby-faced beings with wings are a medieval evolution of the pagan mythologial creature--winged lion-like creatures the Hebrews called cherubim (plural). The Ark of the Covenant was decorated with a pair of these creatures whose wings of both spread upwards and touched each other. They fashioned a chair upon which the psalm said Yahweh (God) sat: "qui sedet super cherubim" (Forget the Psalm number). It's a symbol of the powerful presence of God who accopanies and protects His people. -- Fr. Juan
